Durban’s skyline is expected to glow with vibrant colour to mark the Festival of Chariots or Ratha-Yathra this Easter long weekend.
The colourful festival observed by devotees of the Hindu deity Krishna, has become a popular feature on Durban’s social and entertainment calendar every Easter long weekend.
Three chariots that are 15 metres high have been decorated with vibrant colourful flower garlands and lights depicting the return of Krishna, his brother and sister into the hearts and lives of devotees.
Festival Communications officer, Champakalatha Dasi says everyone is invited to partake in the festival.
“These festivities are happening at the Bay of Plenty on the north of Durban’s Beachfront. It started on Friday 18th of April and will continue until Monday evening itself. Tonight, there is a spectacular fireworks display planned and there has been a tent city erected with fun-filled activities for everyone in the family, from the children to the youth and the adults. Free cultural entertainment as well as an onsite temple where worship could take place and not forgetting that everyone is invited to take a plate of warm biryani which is being served freely to everyone. Admission to the festival is free as usual.”:
