Aftermath of a fire that ripped through the Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban.
Two people, including a one-year-old child, have been killed after a fire ripped through the Kennedy Road informal settlement in Durban in the early hours of Saturday morning.
More than 80 shacks have been destroyed in the blaze, leaving hundreds homeless.
Emergency services are still at the scene.
Relief organisation, Gift of the Givers, has also responded to provide assistance to hundreds of affected people.
The cause of the fire is yet to be established.
Gift of the Givers Community Liaison Officer in KwaZulu-Natal, Bilaal Jeewa, says they are assisting the affected people.
“The team arrived on scene, and we are currently on site. We estimate that about 70 to 100 structures have burned down. There was also the death of a mother with her 1-year-old child. Thus far, we have provided them with teabags, bread, peanut butter, and beanies, etc., because it is a cold, wet morning here in Durban, whilst we wait for disaster management to do an assessment and then to figure out a way forward for these families.”
