Driver involved in fatal Limpopo crash arrested


The driver of the vehicle suspected of causing Wednesday morning’s accident in Limpopo in which five people were killed has been arrested.

It is alleged that he made an illegal U-turn on the N1 between Modimolle and Mookgophong causing a collision with other cars, including a bakkie.

A child is amongst those killed in the crash.

The Department of Transport’s Tshifhiwa Dali says the driver was under the influence of alcohol and other unknown substances.

“A U-turn by a car traveling from Polokwane to Johannesburg is the primary cause of this accident, which led to the arrival vehicles colliding head-on and losing, like you indicated, five lives, which includes unfortunately is a minor. And on that note, this is a reckless human error committed by a person who, as we speak now, is under arreste by the members of the police services. They’ve confirmed that his alcohol intake was above the required limit. The ones involved in accident were not at all drunk only the person who allegedly caused this accident was drunk that is why the is under police guard.”
