Driver in fatal Vanderbijlpark crash to appear in court on Thursday


The scholar transport driver who was involved in a crash in which 12 learners were killed in Vanderbijlpark, Johannesburg, is expected to appear in a local magistrate’s court on Thursday.

The 22-year-old man is facing 12 counts of culpable homicide as well as reckless and negligent driving.

Three learners are still in hospital following the crash, which happened on Monday.

Gauteng Premier Panyaza Lesufi told the media that the driver’s driving permit expired last year.

Gauteng Police Spokesperson Mavela Masondo says, “The police have arrested the 22-year-old scholar transport driver. He was arrested after he was discharged from hospital. He is expected to appear before Vanderbijlpark Magistrate’s Court. The driver of the truck that was involved in the accident escaped unharmed, while the passenger sustained injuries and was receiving treatment in hospital.”
