Johannesburg Metro Police have arrested a man for overloading his vehicle and driving without a permit. The man who was transporting learners to school was found travelling with more than 20 of them in his minibus, which is supposed to carry fewer passengers.
The Transport Department is currently in Lenasia, south of Johannesburg, conducting a Scholar Transport Safety operation, with a focus on compliance. The department’s Minister Barbara Creecy addressed the media as officers made the arrest.
“I’m told that the driver behind me has just been arrested because he has 25 children packed in a vehicle and we all understand the role that overloading plays in this,” says Creecy.
