The Township Economic Commission of South Africa (TECSA) has issued a warning to citizens allegedly registering tuck shops on behalf of undocumented migrants.
This follows President Cyril Ramaphosa’s directive requiring tuck shop owners to register their businesses with municipal authorities by December 13 or face closure.
Commission president Bheki Thwala emphasized the importance of integrating spaza shops into the formal economy to benefit township communities.
“It’s very critical to move the spaza shops from the informal economy to the formal economy because we are talking about a 150 to 180 billion rand market that also qualifies to be taken to the formal economy,” Thwala said.
He added that registration is necessary to ensure compliance with business regulations.
“Spaza shops need to be registered, have bank accounts, register with CIPC, and have all the trade licenses, trade permits, and certificates that are very critical,” he stated.
