Police Minister, Professor Firoz Cachalia.
Police Minister Professor Firoz Cachalia and National Police Commissioner General Fannie Masemola have agreed to submit the 121 dockets linked to the political killings task team to the Madlanga Commission. This follows a meeting between the two on Monday.
There have been mixed reactions to the National Police Commissioner’s decision to return the dockets to KwaZulu-Natal, with Cachalia slamming his decision and, in turn, receiving flak from some political parties like the Economic Freedom Fighters and uMkhonto weSizwe Party.
In a statement, the Ministry of Police says the National Commissioner confirmed that the South African Police Service will fully support the work of the Madlanga Commission, further adding that the two leaders also recognise the urgent need to strengthen SAPS’s capacity to investigate the killings of councillors, public officials, whistle-blowers and professionals, who play important roles in combating corruption and organised crime.
