The founder of the Institute for Security Studies (ISS), Dr Jakkie Cilliers has dismissed claims that South Africa faces a potential coup risk.
Minister in the Presidency for State Security, Khumbudzo Ntshavheni, on Tuesday revealed that the country’s intelligence services had identified potential threats of a coup d’état.
Ntshavheni, however, assured the nation that the situation is under control with ongoing monitoring and mitigation measures in place to protect the country.
Cilliers has called the minister’s remarks irresponsible and unfortunate.
“This is not good for SA, for investor confidence, for a government that is trying to rebuild confidence in the country and to attract foreign investment. So, I just think that she eventually probably regretted her statement because I think it just seemed to be so out of kilter and so inappropriate. But it certainly was ill-advised. And I just can’t think that there’s any real chance or threat of something like that.”
Ntshavheni assures that SA is safe, security not at risk:
