The 20th IRONMAN African Championships electrified Gqeberha, Eastern Cape, with a staggering prize pool of over R3 million at stake. Over 2 000 athletes, including 80 elite professionals, converged on the scenic course, ready to push their limits in the grueling triathlon event.

Denmark’s Magnus Ditlev delivered an awe-inspiring performance, outpacing the world’s number one with a blistering finish time of 7 hours and 44 minutes. T

“I am really happy and proud of my performance, very, very proud, here in South Africa. The swim looked calm but it was actually a bit rough. There was a separation in the swim. I didn’t expect to be 2 and a half minutes behind out of the water and rode at my own pace and caught the guys one by one,” says Ditlev.

Germany’s Anne Reischmann proved unstoppable, securing back-to-back IRONMAN wins despite the challenging run conditions. She has commended fellow athletes for their bravery.

“The race was very—I have lots of respect for everyone that finished today. The wind was insane, making cycling and the run a bit tough; it was a really amazing racing atmosphere, with so many people on the course cheering. The atmosphere was also great, and the aid stations.”
