Disgruntled ANC staff members take fight for salaries to ANC NGC

Disgruntled African National Congress (ANC) staff members and members of Nehawu have taken their grievances over what they term recurring late salary payments to the entrance of the Birchwood Hotel in Boksburg, where the party is set to hold its National General Council (NGC) meeting over the next four days.

Holding placards with some reading: “We need to school fees”, “Pay our medical staff”, “No intimidation to staff”, among others, the protesters say they hope the move will put pressure on the powers that be within the party to do right by them.

ANC NGC delegate and Nehawu branch Deputy Secretary, Dan Semenya says, “Today, we are picketing outside, here at the NGC based on three issues that affect staff – mainly the recurring late payments, secondly the issue revolves the provident fund contribution which have not been pai for quite some time now … it’s almost six months now that has not paid; and our medical aids contribution.”

He says that recently, some members had to find out from health service providers that their medical aid policies had been suspended owing to non-payments.

“These issues disrupt our lives, they affect the lives of our families, they affect the (pension) of our members in general. If you remember, in 2022, in July, in Nasrec during the policy conference, we were at the doorstep of the policy conference with the same issues and to date, we are still struggling to get to a level where the leadership or management of the ANC can address these issues,” says Semenya.

The meeting in Boksburg is the party’s 5th NGC, the last having been in 2015 and having failed to convene in 2021 at the height of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Under the theme: “The Year of Renewal: Making the ANC a More Effective Instrument of the People to Achieve the Vision of the Freedom Charter”, the meeting comes at a time when the party faces serious electoral challenges ahead of the 2026 Local Government Elections.

The meeting is underway.
