Water and Sanitation Minister Pemmy Majodina says the Disaster Management Act sets out clearly the responsibilities of the organs of state in the national, provincial, and local spheres on when to implement a disaster management plan.
She was answering a written parliamentary question from Rise Mzansi leader Songezo Zibi. Recently, some of the country’s metropolitan municipalities have been reported to be experiencing a severe shortage of water.
Zibi asked whether the department has a disaster management plan in place, should there be a partial or full collapse of water services in the metros.
Majodina says her department is only responsible for the development of the sector disaster management plan.
She says level 1 of the plan has been submitted and recorded on the database of the disaster management plan within the National Disaster Management Centre.
