Deputy Chief of Police at the Tshwane Metro Police Department, Umashi Dhlamini
Tshwane Metro Police Department deputy chief Umashi Dhlamini says he requested voluntary suspension after suspended police sergeant Fannie Nkosi implicated him in alleged corruption.
Dhlamini is testifying before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry in Pretoria on Friday.
Evidence before the Commission has shown WhatsApp messages between Dhlamini, suspended Thswane CFO Gareth Mnisi and Nkosi related to alleged tender rigging.
Dhlamini says he requested police chief Yolande Faro to place him on suspension following the evidence.
“Then the next day, I sat with the Chief to say, since there are these allegations, what is the City doing in terms of them? I couldn’t get a straight answer. Then the 20th, I felt I can’t be sitting at work. Everyone will come and ask, what is happening? You find yourself explaining. You go to a meeting, everyone asks you. Then I felt it might be good for me to request to be placed on precautionary suspension.”
