Deputy Police Minister questions move to disband PKTT

Deputy Police Minister Cassel Mathale says he does not understand the rationale behind the disbandment of the Political Killings Task Team.

Mathale has been testifying at the Ad Hoc Committee investigating allegations of criminal infiltration, corruption and political interference in the justice system.

The allegations were made by KwaZulu-Natal Police Commissioner, Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, during a media briefing in July.

Mathale was being questioned by MPs on the disbandment of the PKTT.

“I say would I do not know what informed the minister’s decision in December. I don’t know what was going on in his mind when he was going to the letter. Of course, in his explanation, he says he was sitting at home … when he wrote that directive.”

Mathale says he heard about the disbandment of the PKTT on social media.

He says Mchunu eventually sent the original document early in January.

“I first dismissed it, it was odd to see. When he confirmed that he wrote it, I didnt understand what could’ve motivated him to pen such a letter in the way he did,” says Mathale.
