Deputy Minister slams NSFAS for payment delays

1 minute

Higher Education and Training Deputy Minister Dr. Mimmy Gondwe has described the National Student Financial Aid Scheme (NSFAS) as incompetent.

She says delays to pay students’ allowances has a negative impact on their studies.

Gondwe was speaking at the Goldfields TVET College in Welkom in the Free State yesterday.

“NSFAS needs to get its act together in terms of making sure that students’ allowances are paid on time and there are no delays. Because those delays pose serious endearment for learners and their ability to even concentrate to even have money to eat and to buy their hygiene products and the likes just to have a sense of well-being and dignity. I was in a company of two NSFAS officials who have remained behind to attend to those enquiries. Another issue was the issue of pending results, so we need to assist as the head to ensure that the results are released so that learners can go out and those that need to find jobs can do so. Another issue that came out was the issue of historic debt.”
