The Department of Employment and Labour believes the 20 000 inspector and enforcement interns will boost the Department’s capacity in ensuring fair labour practices across the country.

They are expected to be recruited over two years.

The Department’s spokesperson Thobeka Magcai says the recruitment process of the first cohort is expected to start next week.

“During her first 100 days in office, Minister Nomakhosazana Meth committed to strengthen the capacity of the inspection and enforcement by increasing the number of inspectors from 2 000 to 20 000, as one of the key priorities. The minister has since delivered on her promise that she made during that period. The ground-breaking graduate internship programme will bring onboard 10 000 interns annually, recruited from across all nine provinces, thereby boosting the Department’s capacity to promote fair labour practice nationwide.”
