Denver shelter residents concerned about possible flooding

Residents of the Denver shelter in the Johannesburg inner City have expressed concern about flooding in the area. This comes after the South African Weather Service issued a warning for severe thunderstorms in Johannesburg.

It has been raining in different parts of the city since Sunday.

Many of the residents of the shelter were temporarily moved from the Usindiso Building following a fire in which over 70 people died in August 2023, leaving the residents feeling helpless.

One resident says, “There’s water everywhere due to the heavy rainfalls, we don’t know what to do at this point. Even in our shacks, there is water everywhere, it’s difficult to sleep at night, it is even worse with the children.”

Another resident says, “We are pleading to be moved from here to a better place. They said it’s a temporary shelter but we have been here for the longest time now. Also, our safety is not secured here.”
