Burnt Riverlea High School classrooms
Education activist Hendrick Makaneta has commended the Gauteng Education Department for swiftly responding to the situation at the Riverlea High School in Johannesburg.
The department has delivered a number of mobile classrooms to the school after a fire destroyed 11 classrooms last week.
Police are investigating a case of arson.
Makaneta says it is important for role players, including parents, to also come on board.
“But I think that it is very much important to walk an extra mile. Government alone should not be the one dealing with these issues. We really want to see communities also coming on board in the form of moral support and encouraging our learners. Remember that some of the learners will be writing their matric. And they’re about to finish their curriculum in June. So, they really need support. Especially those who are affected by a range of issues within the terrain.”
