Delays by ad hoc committee over Mkhwanazi’s allegations concerning: ActionSA

ActionSA has added its voice to political parties serving on Parliament’s ad hoc committee that are concerned about the time available to complete their work.

The committee was established to look into threats of national security, following allegations made by KwaZulu-Natal Provincial Commissioner Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi of serious corruption in the criminal justice system.

The ad hoc committee has a deadline of the end of October to report back to the National Assembly. So far, the committee has had three meetings, two of which were held to thrash out its terms of reference.

ActionSA MP, Dereleen James, says at this stage it is inevitable that an extension will have to be sought.

“ActionSA is extremely concerned about continuous delays, concerned that the committee is due to submit a report in just seven weeks. At this point, it is inevitable that its work will require an extension given the gravity and given the scale of allegations under investigation and in light of the time constraints and existing delays, it is evident that extensions to the committee’s work will be unavoidable at this point in time,” says James.

Furthermore, the IFP MP, Albert Mncwango, cautioned that given the gravity of the work, it was necessary to ensure the basics are sorted out properly. He says from here on, things would be moving at a steadier pace.

“We are, on Friday, going to be looking at the outstanding issues of logistics and then also agree on the first date upon which we will have our first hearing. So, there is progress, even though one would actually be happy if the pace was a little bit accelerated.”
