Deidre Uren appointed SABC News head

The South African Broadcasting Corporation (SABC) has appointed Deidre “Dee” Uren as News and Current Affairs Group Executive, effective from April 1.

SABC Group Chief Executive Officer (GCEO) Nomsa Chabeli made the announcement at the public broadcaster’s head office in Auckland Park, Johannesburg, on Friday.

Chabeli says, “As many of you will know, Dee has served in this role in an acting capacity since 1 January 2025, during which time she has provided strong leadership and stability to the News and Current Affairs division.”

She says Uren brings more than three decades of experience at the SABC, including over 20 years in senior and middle management roles.

“Throughout her career, she has demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the values of public service broadcasting and to the delivery of credible, independent journalism.”

Chabeli says Uren’s leadership experience spans both the operational management of newsrooms and the coordination of some of the public broadcaster’s most significant national broadcast projects.

“These include multiple national election coverage cycles as well as other major national and international events where the SABC’s role in informing the nation is most visible. During her acting tenure, Dee has continued to guide the newsroom with professionalism and clarity, ensuring that the organisation remains focused on delivering high-quality journalism across radio, television and digital platforms.”
