Civil society movement Defend Our Democracy is demanding clarity from the Ekurhuleni Metro on the circumstances surrounding the murder of senior auditor Mpho Mafole.
Mafole, who was head of forensic audits at the Ekurhuleni Metro, was gunned down while driving on the R23 in Kempton Park on Monday evening.
Police found Mafole’s body inside his vehicle with multiple gunshot wounds.
The organisation’s executive director, Naledi Kuali, says the killing threatens the safety of dedicated public servants.
“This tragedy is a stark reminder of the urgent need to strengthen the protection of whistleblowers and anti-corruption officials. Defend Our Democracy extends its heartfelt condolences to Mr Mafole’s family, colleagues, and loved ones during this difficult time. We urge law enforcement agencies to bring the perpetrators to justice swiftly.”
