A man holds a framed picture of South African national soccer team goalkeeper and captain, Senzo Meyiwa during his funeral service in Durban November 1, 2014.
Defence counsel Zandile Mshololo says she plans to call Senzo Meyiwa’s brother to the witness stand in the murder case being heard at the High Court in Pretoria.
Sifiso Meyiwa is said to have made a statement to the police after allegedly hearing from Orlando Pirates chairperson Irvin Khoza about what transpired inside Kelly Khumalo’s parental home in Vosloorus the night the footballer was killed.
Five men are on trial for the 2014 murder of the Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana captain.
During the cross-examination of lead investigator Bongani Gininda, Mshololo said Sifiso Meyiwa spoke with Dr Khoza who allegedly said Meyiwa was shot and killed accidentally by one of those who were inside the house.
Mshololo: The defence will be calling if the state does not call Sifiso Meyiwa – the brother of Senzo Meyiwa who is bringing the information contained here.
Baloyi: Even if they call Sifiso, it will still be hearsay. The only person my Lord, if they give an undertaking is that they intend to call Dr Khoza. Then that will be a different consideration altogether
Mshololo: My Lord, we will bring the necessary application to call those witnesses.
Today’s court proceedings:
Earlier Advocate Zandile Mshololo, lawyer for accused number 5, Fisokuhle Ntuli, said her client denies exchanging firearms at the hostel where the State says Senzo Meyiwa’s murder was planned.
Those allegations had been contained in a statement by Constable Sizwe Zungu, who previously testified and placed all five of the accused at the hostel in Vosloorus, on the day in 2014 when the soccer star was killed.
