Defence alleges police assault on accused one in Meyiwa trial

Defence counsel Charles Mnisi has alleged that accused number one Muzi Sibiya was assaulted on two different occasions, when police questioned him about his alleged involvement in Senzo Meyiwa’s murder.

Sibiya and four other accused are on trial at the High Court in Pretoria for the 2014 murder of the Bafana Bafana captain.

Sibiya was initially arrested in 2019 on a drug dealing charge and released, then arrested again in May 2020.

Advocate Mnisi is cross examining lead investigator Brigadier Bongani Gininda on the events that led to the arrest of Sibiya.

“Upon his arrest, he was then taken to Chloorkop. He says, upon the arrival at Cloorkop, they put him in one of the unoccupied offices. There, they also asked him questions in relation to the death of Senzo. When he informed them that he knows nothing about this, they then started to assault him. He continued to deny any knowledge about the death of Senzo.”
