Death toll in Saulsville shooting rises to 11


Police say the number of people killed in a shooting incident in Saulsville, west of Pretoria, has risen to eleven. This after one person succumbed to wounds in hospital.

The deceased includes children aged three and twelve.

Fourteen others were wounded and have been taken to hospital.

The shooting happened at a drinking establishment at the local hostel early on Saturday morning.

Police say the tavern owner is among the wounded.

National police spokesperson Athlenda Mathe says, “We are told that at least three unknown gunmen entered this hostel where a group of people were drinking, and they started randomly shooting. In terms of the deceased, the youngest is 3 years old. We’ve also got a 12-year-old and a 16-year-old, and the eight others that are deceased are adults.”

She adds: “We are still investigating the motive, but as I’ve indicated, maximum resources have been deployed to arrest those that are behind this incident.”
