‘Deaf community facing serious barriers” when reporting crimes’

Members of the Deaf community continue to face serious barriers when reporting crimes, often due to a lack of qualified South African Sign Language (SASL) interpreters and poor communication infrastructure.

These challenges not only delay justice but leave many Deaf individuals feeling isolated and vulnerable.

Advocacy groups are calling for urgent reforms, including the official recognition of SASL and better training for police and court officials to ensure equal access to justice for all citizens.
