DBE determined to get rid of paedophiles in schools

The Department of Basic Education (DBE) says it is determined to use a multi-faceted approach to clean the system of sexual predators.

This after the Education Labour Relations Council found at least 39 teachers countrywide guilty of sexual misconduct perpetrated against learners.

The council says most of the teachers are from KwaZulu-Natal, followed by Gauteng.

The department’s spokesperson Elijah Mhlanga says they need more than just vetting.

“Some people get vetted, once they are in the system, then get involved in criminal activity. So vetting is not a guarantee whatsoever,” says Mhlanga.

“We need to focus on changing the mindset. Remind the adult that they have a duty to protect the young person that is in front of them, that they are supposed to educate and nurture,” he adds.
