Day Zero looms as Knysna issues water consumption warning

The Knysna Municipality in the Western Cape has warned residents to keep household water consumption to below six kiloliters a month as the town is inching closer to Day Zero. Days of usable water are numbered in the Akkerkloof Dam.

Below-average rainfall, failing infrastructure, and rising demand have pushed water supply to the edge.

Knysna Municipality Director of Community Services, Johnny Douglas, says while new sources, like boreholes, are being investigated, residents need to cut back on usage.

“Please conserve water. You need to try and measure or monitor your water consumption to not be above six kiloliters per household per month. So we’ll also now focus on those critical measures to identify where we have water wastage. Our law enforcement units are also going around focusing on those hotspot areas.”
