Finance minister, Enoch Gondogwana.
Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana says the key message being taken to Davos, Switzerland for the World Economic Forum in January, is that South Africa is ripe for investment and ready to do business.
Speaking to the media at a pre-WEF business breakfast, Godongwana said trade negotiations with the United States are ongoing, adding that government is also in the process of appointing an ambassador to that country.
The minister says South Africa will resume its G20 participation in 2027 following the country’s exclusion from US G20 next year.
“We are involved in intense trade negotiations with the US, and those negotiations are going very well. Maybe what’s attracting them with the US is what they call genocide, as a result they are not accrediting the US for G20, but it does not mean a necessary fallout with the USA.”
Godongwana adds, “It’s up to the member states to decide what to do as far as we are concerned if we are excluded by the US in 2026, 2027 G20 goes to the United Kingdom and so we’ll resume our seat in 2027.”
