DA warns Ramaphosa that ousting Gwarube will be death nail for GNU

The Democratic Alliance (DA) says while the President has the prerogative to hire and fire his Cabinet, he should keep in mind that the African National Congress (ANC) does not have a majority.

The remarks follow reports of an ANC faction pushing President Cyril Ramaphosa to fire Basic Education Minister Siviwe Gwarube.

DA national spokesperson Willie Aucamp says if Ramaphosa dismisses Gwarube or any other DA-affiliated ministers, the Government of National Unity (GNU) would come to an end.

“We understand that it is the President within his prerogative to hire and fire his Cabinet but the President must realize that he is not the leader of a party with a full majority anymore. It is not like in the previous Parliament. The President, is there because they had to go into a coalition or this Government of National Unity with the Democratic Alliance and there was a memorandum of understanding that was signed.”
