DA suspects political interference in Julius Mkhwanazi report delay

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Ekurhuleni says it suspects political interference to be the cause of the delay to release the disciplinary report of Ekurhuleni Metro Police Acting Chief, Julius Mkhwanazi.

The report was expected to be released last Thursday.

However, Mayor Nkosindiphile Xhakaza says that more time is needed to ensure that all necessary procedures are followed before the release of the report.

The investigation follows allegations that Mkhwanazi has links to businessman and suspected criminal cartel member, Vusimuzi “Cat” Matlala.

DA Spokesperson for Community Safety in Ekurhuleni, Jaco Terblance, says the DA is not backing down.

“In my honest opinion, there is still political interference in his disciplinary (process) and somebody is trying to protect him and from the DA side. We are not going to leave it and we will continue to put pressure on authorities until he has his day in court and until all the accusations are tested in the court of law and let the processes go where it should go,” says Terblance.

Meanwhile, former City of Ekurhuleni Manager, Dr Imogen Mashazi, was allegedly reluctant to vet an Independent Police Investigative Directorate background check on Mkhwanazi.

This emerged during the testimony of EMPD Chief Jabulani Mapiyeye before the Madlanga Commission of Inquiry yesterday.
