DA submits 38 000 individual objections to E Cape town name changes

The Democratic Alliance (DA) in the Eastern Cape has submitted over 38 000 individual objections to Arts and Culture Minister, Gayton Mckenzie, on the geographical name changes of five towns in the province.

The party says the name changes were implemented without proper consultations with residents of the affected areas.

The opposed name changes include the renaming of Graaff-Reinet to Robert Sobukwe Town, Aberdeen to Xamdeboo, Adendorp to Bishohp Limba, East London to KuGompo City and Barkly East to Ekhephini.

DA MPL and shadow MEC for Arts and Culture Leander Kruger says the office of the Minister has confirmed the receipt of the submissions.

“In terms of national geographical names Act, the minister is required to respond to every individual outlining his decisions and the reasons for it this massive objections is a result of community effort people across these towns standing together against unwanted name changes approved without proper consultation, the DA supports redress and reconciliation, but ofrced poorly consulted name changes do not unite people.”
