DA says schools in Orange Farm overcrowded, learners have no desks

Learners at Jabulile and Raphela Secondary schools in Orange Farm south of Johannesburg are forced to stand during lessons due to a severe overcrowding and a shortage of desks and chairs.

That’s according to the DA in Gauteng following an oversight visit to the school.

The party’s spokesperson on education, Sergio Isa Dos Santos says classrooms at the schools are overcrowded with up to 60 learners in one class.

He says there is also structural damage at the schools.

“The DA-led government would implement a triage system to urgently identify, prioritise schools in crises, ensuring every child learns in a safe and dignified environment. We will not stop until the Gauteng Education Department delivers on its constitutional obligation to each and every single learner.”
