The Democratic Alliance (DA) has retained the hotly contested ward 34 by-election in Nelson Mandela Bay in the Eastern Cape.
The DA retained the ward by 188 votes difference, in a neck and neck race against the Patriotic Alliance (PA).
The PA managed to grow its support from 2% to 42%, while DA dropped from 61% to 46% but managed to retain the ward.
Another party that lost support is the National Alliance (NA) which dropped from 17% to 6%.
The ward became vacant following the death of Councillor Johnny Arends.
Eastern Cape DA Chairperson Yusuf Cassim says the victory shows voters are uniting behind the party.
Cassim says, “The DA congratulates newly elected Ward Councillor Annelize Stanley on her victory. We are confident that she will represent the residents of Ward 34 with dedication and integrity. “
“We extend our heartfelt gratitude to our activist volunteers, public representatives, campaign teams, staff and most importantly, the voters who supported the DA in this crucial by-election.”
He adds, “The DA will continue to fight for quality service delivery and good governance being brought back to the Nelson Mandela Bay.”
