The Democratic Alliance (DA) says its application against a value-added tax (VAT) hike is still proceeding in the Western Cape High Court this coming Tuesday.
The DA, the African National Congress’s (ANC) biggest government of national unity partner, voted against the fiscal policy framework when it was tabled in parliament earlier this month.
The DA has maintained its position against the half-a-percentage-point VAT hike announced by Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana.
DA spokesperson Karabo Khakhau says the party will meet with the ANC this coming Thursday to discuss the VAT increase.
Khakhau says the DA is still proceeding to court on the 22nd of April.
“We are going to be hearing part A of our application, which is to have an urgent interdiction on the implementation of a VAT hack on the 1st of May and obviously to set aside the decisions that Parliament’s Joint Committee on Finance took. So that is still ongoing and we’re doing this earnestly because we still are of the belief that South Africans should not be taxed more and that the process that Parliament followed to do so was incorrect,” says Khakhau.
