The Democratic Alliance’s (DA) federal leadership have refused to be drawn into speculation about the possibility of Cape Town Mayor, Geordin Hill-Lewis, succeeding John Steenhuisen as party leader.
This comes as Hill-Lewis confirmed via social media posts that he had been approached by party members to stand, following Steenhuisen’s announcement that he will bow out.
After John Steenhuisen’s announcement yesterday, I have been approached by many party members to stand for the position of Federal Leader.
The DA’s internal campaign rules stipulate that public campaigning may only begin when the nomination period opens. That will happen later…

The party has begun its local government election campaign by announcing eight mayoral candidates, in mostly rural areas in the Western Cape. In the social media post, Hill-Lewis says he will announce his intentions later this month.
He has however stated that he remains committed to stand for a second term as mayor.
DA Federal Chairperson, Dr Ivan Meyer says, “He is a capable, competent mayor in Cape Town. but he will make his announcement, I am not here to speak on his behalf. He is a friend of mine, and I would like him to make his announcement at the right time but, I am here to represent the Democratic Alliance and defend the processes that we went through. At the right time, he will speak for himself.”
