DA leader John Steenhuisen
Democratic Alliance (DA) leader John Steenhuisen has denied that he has been captured by the African National Congress (ANC), and he is pushing the party’s policies as minister.
Steenhuisen, who was the fiercest critic of the ANC-led government, is now the Minister of Agriculture in President Cyril Ramaphosa’s cabinet.
This followed the composition of the Government of National Unity (GNU) after the 2024 national elections, where the ANC failed to get the majority.
During its days in the opposition benches, the DA was opposed to some of the ANC’s transformative policies.
But speaking to SABC News, Steenhuisen says they are independent and not a rubber stamp of the ANC policies.
“We are in court on expropriation without compensation. I am very confident we are going to win that case and there is going to be a re-negotiation and it’s gonna happen in an environment where there is a Parliament where the ANC has no majority. On NHI, it’s very clear when you look at the budget just how alive the NHI is and on BELA there is a DA minister doing the regulations.”
“We are not pushing the ANC policy. The regulation that Minister Gwarube has done, the BELA are very mindful of the mother tongue instruction and very mindful of what power the School Governing Body should have and have been welcomed by all players in that. The Expropriation Act, there has not been a single attempt to expropriate without compensation in the country yet.”
