DA lays charges against former Gauteng Health Chief Financial Officer

The DA has opened a criminal case against former Gauteng Health Chief Financial Officer Lerato Madyo. The party says Madyo failed to institute an investigation into possible looting and corruption at Tembisa Hospital.

Slain whistleblower Babita Doekaran first raised the alarm over suspicious payments to the tune of R850 million to Madyo.

Deokaran was killed in front of her house in August 2021.

Gauteng DA Health Spokesperson Jack Bloom says Doekaran alerted Madyo of her findings two weeks before she was assassinated, but Madyo did not act on the information.

We are frustrated that nobody is being criminally charged all these years later. It’s very good to attach assets and we commend the SIU for doing that, but the criminal charges have to start. So, that’s why we’ve started the ball rolling and we will follow this case because we want to see this mastermind, syndicate heads and the kingpins the people who bought ferraris they need to be charged and appear in court.”

DA Gauteng leader Solly Msimanga says that Babita Deokaran reported corruption and 19 days later she was murdered.

“If you follow the sequence of things, Babita reports that there’s wrongdoings that is taking place that needs to be investigated. 19 days later, she is murdered, two weeks later after her murder the full payment has been paid. She cannot be just a victim of a robbery. This was calculated. This was something that was aimed at silencing her. There are people who had been arrested. Those were hitmen and the question is what and who is behind it,” says Msimanga.
