The Democratic Alliance says Parliament’s newly established Oversight Committee on the Presidency could become one of the strongest tools for holding the executive to account, if used properly.
The National Assembly approved the committee last week. It will give MPs a dedicated mechanism to scrutinise the Presidency’s work, spending, and decision-making.
The DA, which says it originally pushed for the establishment of the Committee, says it now wants to ensure that the body delivers meaningful oversight.
The party’s Chief Whip George Michalakis says, “We do believe that the added mechanism in parliament, which never existed before, will strengthen oversight in parliament. The DA itself, we will obviously use our members on that committee to ensure that the process is robust and fair and we look forward to playing our role in this committee, in which we have played a very, very key role in setting up.”
🎥 This week on the Chief Whip’s Minute, we end the year with a major win: Parliament has established a committee to hold the President directly accountable, with the DA leading the way.
