The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Gauteng says it’s tabling a motion in the provincial legislature to debate a proposal to reverse the centralisation of the food parcel distribution to community-based non-profit organisations and regional food banks.
The party’s shadow MEC for Social Development, Refiloe Nt’sekhe, says this follows the revelation by Gauteng Health MEC, Nomantu Nkomo-Ralehoko that over 8,000 child malnutrition cases were observed in the province’s clinics and hospitals last year.
Nt’sekhe says Social Development MEC, Faith Mazibuko’s decision to centralise food bank operations is causing mayhem.
“This is concerning particularly when in the first quarter social development had a target to distribute 53,000 food parcels and only got to 34,000. In terms of their pro-poor basket their target was 434,000 and they didn’t even distribute one. We will be tabling a motion in the Gauteng Legislature to debate the call for us to decentralise food banks and ensure that services are brought closer to the people,” says Nt’sekhe.
