The Democratic Alliance (DA) in Johannesburg has expressed concern that the alleged fraudulent activities in City Power’s governance and financial management are having a negative impact on residents’ power supply.
Some suburbs in the city have been experiencing power outages in recent weeks. There have been reports of alleged corruption and maladministration at the power utility.
The party has officially requested a probe into the matter.
“Melrose was about seven days without power and there are other suburbs that have been about 12 days without power. City Power technicians come out, they do work, and they have to come out a few times to do the same work. This is just an example of some of the questions we have asked City Power to clarify that this is what we see on the ground, contractors come out to do the same work a few times. What are the quality control measures to see that work is actually completed and how is it signed off when the same work has to be done a few times,” says DA Caucus Leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku.
