DA calls on President to send GNU delegation to US to mend relations

The Democratic Alliance (DA) has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to send a delegation of the GNU to the United States to broker peace with the Donald Trump administration.

This follows the expulsion of South Africa’s ambassador to the US, Ibrahim Rasool.

Last night, US Secretary of State Marco Rubio posted on social media platform X that Rasool was no longer welcome in the US. He said Ebrahim Rasool is a race-baiting politician who hates America and insisting they have nothing to discuss with him.

Rasool has since been declared a persona non-grata and ordered to leave the country within 72 hours.

DA spokesperson Willie Aucamp says it is regrettable but insists the President must send a delegation to help mend relations with the US.

“The DA deems the situation in US concerning. Our ambassador there as deeply unfortunate and we call on the president to expedite the GNU delegation to the USA to negotiate a pathway towards stabilisation of the diplomatic relations with one of our country’s most important trade and investment partners. The DA and other partners in the GNU must also now urgently become involved in framing foreign policy. It is simply just not right that the ANC has got carte blanche on foreign policy and the appointments of diplomats while they are only a 39 percent party. “
