The DA in Johannesburg has criticised City Power‘s plan to cut electricity to entire neighbourhoods unless 80% of households prove legitimate vending compliance.

The party has called the utility’s plan unconstitutional and unfair, saying that it punishes paying customers and harms vulnerable residents.
It’s demanded that the city scrap the blanket disconnection plan immediately.
DA Johannesburg Caucus Leader Belinda Kayser-Echeozonjoku says, “The city’s own bylaws doesn’t allow them to punish entire neighbourhoods. It clearly states that the city should cut off or punish the actual violators and unfortunately, what they are trying to do is punish people for what their neighbour would have done wrong. This violates the basic right of people to have access to basic services like electricity. It punishes the poor.”
