D-day for 192 parties to make IEC submissions or face deregistration

A total of 192 political parties have until the end of business today to make their submissions as to why they should not be de-registered by the Electoral Commission.

More than a week ago the IEC issued a notice of cancellation of registration to inactive political parties including the South African Communist Party (SACP).

In return, the SACP responded saying it made its submission a few days after receiving the commission’s notice. The commission has highlighted the importance of political parties notifying them of their continued existence.

It says the register of parties is kept current and those parties with no intention of contesting future elections are de-registered.

There are currently over 600 registered political parties in South Africa, with 383 registered nationally and 226 at provincial or municipal levels.
