The Department of Transport has expressed shock at the assassination of the Gauteng chairperson of the National Taxi Alliance, Thamsanqa Moyo.
Moyo was shot along the Soweto Highway near Diepkloof on Thursday.
A group of assailants travelling in vehicles, including a minibus, opened fire on Moyo’s bakkie as he was driving from Soweto to the Johannesburg CBD for a taxi-related meeting.
Police suspect the attack to be related to taxi-related violence. The department’s spokesperson Collen Msibi says, “Upon hearing the news of Mr Moyo’s fatal shooting, Minister Creecy reached out to the Acting Minister of Police, Prof. Firoz Cachalia, who gave assurance to Creecy that a process to establish an investigation team is already underway.”
Creecy and Hlengwa have called for calm and space to allow the police to do their investigative work to ensure that those responsible for this barbaric act face the full might of the law.
