Crane sourced to recover SANDF vehicle after fatal Komatipoort flood

A crane has been sourced to assist in lifting out the South African National Defence Force (SANDF) vehicle that was swept by water at the lower bridge inside the river in Komatipoort, Mpumalanga.

Police divers recovered one body on Friday.

Two SANDF members are believed to have been in the vehicle when it was swept away.

The authorities suspect the other member might still be trapped in or under the vehicle.

The South African Police Service (SAPS) Diving Service’s Johannes Potgieter says, “This morning (Saturday) we started again, we used the helicopter from SAPS and we used a helicopter from EMS (Emergency Management Services), unfortunately we couldn’t find the second member  of the SANDF that was washed away.”

Potgieter adds, “The hope now is that he might be stuck in the vehicle, the next task that we going to do is to try and retrieve, by lucky he might still in the vehicle, if he is not in the vehicle then will continue search the best we can.”
