Vusi ‘Cat’ Matlala and three others appear in the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court north of Johannesburg, July 11, 2025.
The state in the Vusimuzi ‘Cat’ Matlala case says actress Tebogo Thobejane has fled the country as she fears for her life.
The state is opposing bail for the 49-year-old businessman who appeared at the Alexandra Magistrate’s Court, north of Johannesburg.
Matlala is charged with the attempted murder of Thobejane who was wounded during a shooting on the N1 near Sandton, north of Johannesburg in 2023.
He is also facing charges of money laundering and conspiracy to commit murder.
State prosecutor Elise Le Roux says Thobejane doesn’t feel safe in the country.
“It is a fact that Miss Thobejane fled the country out of fear for her life. She communicated with the investigating team that she still fears for her life that’s why she will not return. So her life has also changed forever.”
Meanwhile, the state says Matlala has not been honest as it has been discovered that he has a trust in Mauritius.
Opposing the application, the state has argued that Matlala also has a fraudulent Eswatini identity document with a different surname.
An image of the fraudulent Eswatini identity document is alleged to have been sent through a phone message from Matlala’s wife, who is also the co-accused Thobejane’s attempted murder case.
The prosecutor says Matlala has not been playing open cards with the state as it has been discovered that he has a trust in Mauritius, despite him declaring he had no business interest nor family in a foreign country.
