The North West High Court in Mahikeng has confirmed Mazwi Moruri as the new mayor of the embattled Ditsobotla Local Municipality.

Moruri was elected during a council sitting last week, which saw the then-mayor Thabo Nkashe ousted through a motion of no confidence, for alleged gross negligence.

Nkashe then brought an urgent matter before the court in a bid to retain his position.

Ditsobotla Local Municipality under fire over lack of annual financial statements:

He wanted the court to reinstate him as the mayor and to suspend the council’s decision. However, the matter was struck off the roll.

Ditsobotla Local Municipality spokesperson Pius Batsile elaborates, “Her lordship Judge Reid found that the applicant failed to persuade the court to reinstate him as mayor thus duly ordered that application be struck from the roll due to lack of urgency, with costs of the application to be paid by the applicant in his personal capacity.

Key to the facts, the court found that the applicant never took the oath of office before juristic officer of the court for a period of 18 months and of which is a legal requirement. In a breath of sigh, the duly elected mayor Mazwi Moruri and welcomed the outcome of the court,” adds Batsile. – Report by Thabang Morutloa
