A gavel in the courtroom.
A couple accused of murdering an ex-partner is expected to be sentenced at the Pretoria High Court tomorrow.
Sibusiso and Lerato Mahlangu were found guilty of the premeditated murder of Mahlangu’s former partner, Sibusiso Sithebe.
The pair have also been convicted of conspiracy to commit murder, and three counts of fraud.
The couple orchestrated the 2022 killing of Lerato’s ex-boyfriend and father of her child, Sbusiso Sithebe, by setting him alight and staging the scene to cover their tracks.
Lerato went on to falsely identify the body as that of her husband.
The police uncovered Mahlangu’s identity after he was arrested driving a stolen vehicle during a roadblock. They were convicted of premeditated murder, conspiracy to commit murder, and three counts of fraud in the High Court in Pretoria.
On January 2, 2022, the Mahlangu couple lured Sithebe to their home in Soshanguve, where they killed him, staged the crime scene, and burned his body inside the house.
Lerato later falsely identified the body as her husband’s and filed three fraudulent insurance claims with Old Mutual, totaling R500,000.
