Countries warned against taking unilateral trade actions

B20 Head of Secretariat in South Africa, Anthony Costa has emphasised the need for a predictable and rules-based international trading system, as new tariff policies continue to reshape the global trade landscape.

Costa has acknowledged that while institutions like the World Trade Organisation are in need of reform, he cautioned against countries taking unilateral and rapidly shifting actions.

He was speaking at the two-day Manufacturing Indaba which kicked off in Sandton, Johannesburg today.

“What we’ve tried to do is show the cost of tariffs as well as not so much tariffs themselves, but the fact of an unpredictable and changing trade environment. If there is no predictability, as you well know it’s impossible to plan and if you cannot plan, you cannot make capital investments.”
