COSATU urges President Ramaphosa to dismiss defiant ministers

2 minutes

The Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) has called on President Cyril Ramaphosa to dismiss cabinet ministers who fail to implement government laws and policies.

The federation emphasised the urgency of this action during the African National Congress’ (ANC) National Lekgotla in Boksburg, warning that non-compliance could undermine the ruling party’s performance in the 2026 local government elections.

This follows statements by Public Works Minister and Democratic Alliance (DA) deployee Dean McPherson, who asserted that land expropriation without compensation would not occur under his leadership.

This stance comes after Ramaphosa signed the Expropriation Bill into law earlier this week, which addresses property expropriation and related compensation issues.

Gauteng COSATU Deputy General Secretary, Gerald Twala, stressed the importance of service delivery to secure voter confidence.

“We expect all ministers, without exception, to implement the laws of the country. For those who refuse, particularly DA-aligned ministers, Comrade President, don’t hesitate to act. We must accelerate transformation and deliver on our promises, as the 2026 elections will be won or lost based on our ability to deliver services, grow the economy, create jobs, and tackle crime and inequality,” Twala says.

COSATU also urged the ANC to safeguard workers’ rights under the Government of National Unity (GNU), emphasising the importance of protecting hard-won labor rights amid the current political climate.
