Corruption needs to be treated as a health epidemic that is making society sick. That’s how the Active Citizens’ Movement (ACM) has described the crisis, ahead of International Anti-Corruption Day on Tuesday.
Billions have been lost to corruption in South Africa, with very little accountability or justice.
The ACM is calling on all South Africans to light a candle against corruption between 7 and 8 pm, to cast some light on wrongdoing.

Every year on 09 December, the world observes International Anti-Corruption Day, a day dedicated to raising awareness and strengthening efforts to prevent and combat corruption.

The organisation’s Dr Lubna Nadvi explains how civil society has the power to take a firm stand against corruption.
“It’s important to remind us that the world has unfortunately got elements of corruption that we have been fighting against for decades, and effectively, we have not managed to get rid of this scourge to the extent that we would have liked to. We may not be able to eliminate corruption completely from uh global society, but you know, to ensure that its effects and that its presence do not damage our society and how we function.”
